Whew - Halloween is finally over. My sewing room is no longer the sweatshop of costume making that it has been. Sunday was about cleaning, straightening and organizing for the next flow of projects. Before any Christmas crafts start I am in need of a belt for my jeans. I've been wanting to try one of these patterns forever. I was thinking of doing one in Fall colors and prints -warm hues.
I was thinking of a patchwork one with maybe a single piece of fabric on the other side.

Halloween sewing

I made a skirt and cape for a friends little girl for Halloween. Her mom was going to dress her up as a witch so I was inspired to make some of the costume components. I had the Halloween toile in my stash- black with spider webs with sequins and glitter. I added a ribbon flower for some pizazz. The cape was just from a sketch of a pattern I threw together. It was a black velvet lined with a deep purple satin that had embroidered oriental motifs. I just loved the satiny contrast to the black velvet. I expect this will end up being more of a play costume than a Halloween costume.

Its been a long long time since I posted here. Too long. I'm going to try to really make the effort this month. Anyone else out there tired of Winter too? I don't really mind the snow so much as I'm just minding the damage to house from it. I suppose I should consider myself lucky my roof hasn't fallen in but come Spring there will be plenty of cleanup work. This last weekend I had ice that came off the roof and it damaged about 4 sections of vinyl siding - puncturing holes all the way down. Looks like it damaged a couple of window screens in that process too. Now come Spring I can replace siding and screens - along with the usual cleanup. Oh well - things happen.

I keep trying to focus on the garden - what seeds I'll need. I'd like to completely redo my raised veggie bed. With new untreated wood sides and extend the length by a couple of feet as well.

I signed up for a couple of gardening classes at the local Gardeners Supply. I signed up for the Small Spaces this Saturday and the Composting later in the month. I'm looking forward to the planning of the garden this year. Also after the class I can browse around and check the Outlet store! You can never have too much garden stuff - well I don't think so.

Ok, it's been JUNE since I've posted. Yeah really JUNE. Vermont Summers are short but certainly not a lack of things going on. I think this Summer and Fall have been non stop. I went camping four times this year. I spent one weekend in Montreal and went back for a day trip a month later. I tended to my garden and I am still tending to it now.. late Summer/early Fall lettuce still coming along. I quit my job at IBM of eleven years and started a new job a week later at Dealer.com. : ) Am still waiting for my contractor to be available to start my kitchen renovations. Laid down new tile where my pellet stove will go (when it gets here). Purchased a beach permit but only got to once, due to the rainy weather. I know there is still more stuff.. but I can't think of them right now. All in all it's been one busy Summer and the Fall isn't slowing up either. This photo is of my tomatoes, spinach and lettuce from July.

Gardening in 08'

The other day I finally took some pictures of this years Veggie and Flower beds. I like to compare them from year to year for layout ideas and improvements. What works and what doesn't. This year I planted more tomatoes, lettuce, spinach and peas. I planted less cukes (well maybe I didn't actually), but they are not in the garden. They are in a large flower pot with a tomato trellis for now. I think about half a dozen seeds sprouted up in that pot, some will need transplanting to where I don't know yet. So maybe if all my cuke plants make it I guess I'll have as many as last year. Anyway....
I also planted carrots for the first time this year. My radish seeds will need replanting as there was an accident with the window box they were in. DAMNIT! : (

I think I can still find some room for onions too, here and there. I really went to town I think on the lettuce and the spinach, but I love them and I like to have a steady supply. So much that now I don't believe I'll be purchasing any lettuce for the rest of the Summer. I hope! This is great for me because I eat salad daily and I go through a fair amount. I was just noticing in this picture that I can take out my white fencing and probably sneak in a couple more rows of spinach maybe...
I have planted some herb seeds off to the right in the corner but either they aren't doing anything or they are so tiny they look like a weed still. I think I'm just gonna till it or try to move them somewhere else. That empty space is bothering me and I could put something more productive there.
Normally I keep the herbs in the flower beds. They smell nice there and help with the bugs but this year I thought I'd get them started in the garden. Didn't think it would take this long.

In my perennial beds things are happening. My Bleeding Heart is GIANT. Compared to last year. I think this is the third year I've had it. It came from a coworker that I swap plants with. It was just a small guy when I got it. Now this Spring it has reached heights of nearly 3ft+. Not to mention the inner stalks on it. Looks like celery its so thick. I've counted at least two separate shoots from it so far. My mom has laid claim to one of them! I believe the neighbors septic mound is n the hill behind me. That particular bed sits below it. I think that's why everything I put in there does quite well! (PS. Ignore the weeds.. I need an edger)

Gardening

What a busy week it's been. My aunt had some surgery on Tuesday, nothing major or too serious. By the time we got up there, had the surgery and came home the day was shot. I stayed with her that night in case she needed something. I wish I had taken my camera with me. She lives in Monkton and has this amazing view of Monkton Ridge from her front porch. No matter what time of the year it's beautiful. Her house sits high and you look down at the Dairy farm below in the valley. Very picturesque.

I worked on getting more garden in this week. I purchased some Heirloom Tomato plants from Pleasant Mount Farm in Huntington. She has great stuff! I had some really great luck with her Tomato plants last year so I decided to try it again. I was thinking about buying the seeds and starting them myself but by the time I priced it out it just didnt seem like any savings. I purchased nine plants, two are cherry size. One of those is the Orange Cherry tomato that I got last year. Those were amazing in flavor! Sweet as could be. Both plants got huge and just never seemed to stop yielding. I had a lot that I picked late and was able to still eat into the beginning of December! Thats just sitting on the counter too, ripening slowly. I also got the Green Zebra Stripe very pretty and super sweet in taste. Other than repeating the three that I remembered from last year I told her to "mix up the rest". I like how she wrote a name stick for each plant.
I also picked up some Leaf Lettuce plants, Pansies and Stock. I love that way Stock smells, like baby powder. I think she also has the best colors of pansies. I can never choose just one.
I had already planted some leaf lettuce and it is coming along, though tiny still. But I'm inpatient for it and the plants I bought yesterday are of a nice size and I could be picking leaves in a week or two at best. I figure between mine (if it does ok) and purchased plants I'll be set.
After planting my Tomatoes, Lettuce, radishes, cukes and planting another row of Peas I realized I still have more space in my garden. I'm thinking some carrots and maybe onions in that empty space.

New Stash

Lately the knitting needles have been taking a break. In fact it's been a long break so far. I didn't intend for it to happen it just did. Most of my knitting time happens in the evening during tv time. But there hasn't been much on tv lately and I've been getting home from later and later due to time spent at the gym. Thats not really a bad thing just bad for my knitting. If I'm really truthful it's not just the lack of time knitting its been a lack of interest too. I used to be on Ravelry A LOT. I'd sneak in there inbetween busy work times, early morning and late at night. I'm lucky if I can claim to half a dozen visits in a week now. Guess I'm just in a knitting slump! But I'm definately not in a sewing slump! These items arrived at my house yesterday from Vogue Fabrics.

This some blue and brown cotton lawn that I scored for 1.99 yd! I couldn't pass it up. I also bought the following Brown cotton lawn as well. Same price. I took two yards of each. I was originally thinking skirts but they (at least one) may end up as a top instead. It's a rather sheer cotton so whatever I decide it will need some lining or a tank underneath. Still I love these prints. I think they are very Amy Butlerish.

Then I also saw this chiffon sheer for 1.99 yd. I grabbed just one yard thinking it make a cute sleeveless top as well (again requiring some sort of lining). I love the gold thats worked through it.

The last find I have to post is the Blue Merino Wool knit. I LOVE this color. The fabric has a nice light drape, not heavy at all. I purchased 2 yds thinking some sort of a jacket but now it may be a top. I'm gonna hold off before making any final decisions as the new fall patterns will be out soon.

I finished my blouse from Wendy pattern 3835 that I wrote about last time. It came out really cute. Of course there are no pictures of it yet. Lately all my days off from work have been dreary rainy ones. The lighting has been lousy. I like to take as many shots as I can outside or during the day inside if I have to. But it's just been too dark and dreary. Tomorrow is supposed to nice so I'm really gonna try to get some shots. I have quite a bit of things to post about.

Back to the blouse pattern. This pattern has been a definite success so far. I've worn it three times already. I made a second one right after in a linen/rayon blend. Its a natural linen color with dark blue stitched daisies on it. It came in other thread colors. Very cute. On this however I modified the pattern a bit. I think I'll take some detailed pictures of that and post more about my mods next time.

Gardening and Sewing

I don't have any pictures to post today but the spinach I planted last week is UP! That was quick. I guess my mini greenhouse did the trick. Now we wait and see how the lettuce fairs. I also planted two rows of peas two nights ago. We're supposed to get cold and icky weather next week. Peas love that. I wanted to get them in intime for it. Also I've got tons of flowers are in blossom, again no pictures. : (

Last night I started working on a Blouse. Its from the popular Built by Wendy pattern 3835. I got it cut, side and back seam sewn and part of one sleeve sewn in. My needle hit a pin and I went to change it and realized that my mom has currently has all my sewing supplies. I keep all my extra needles and tools in an old tin can. She needed some things to fix her machine with and I just lent her the whole can. It's been a while and I'd forgotten about. It will be at least a couple more days before I can finish that. I did try it on as it was and it does fit so far. I wasn't sure if I'd like the pattern on me so I did this version out of some very inexpensive quilting fabric. I think it was 4.99 yd and 40% off that. So even if I screw it up or don't like it I'm not out much.

Today I'm going to post about my new addition to my Spinning stash. I scored some beautiful fiber from Jessie. It's some of the last of her Addison Blend in the Pansies colorway. It's absolutely goegeous. I had to share it.

Meeting Relatives and the Bennington Monument

Today we traveled to Bennington Vt. It's about 2 1/2 hours away from my town in Chittenden County. We went to visit with my Aunt Marion who's up from Florida helping out her brother Pete. I haven't seen Aunt Marion in about 8 or 9 years.

We met them at a local Irish Pub Carmody's. The food was great the beer was cold and the service excellent. We even bought nice souvenir glasses at 3.00 a glass! We visited with Aunt Marion and her brother for a while then later we went to local Veterans Hospital Park for pictures. Later on we decided to check out the Bennington Monument. The day was beautiful and I got some pretty good pictures.

At the Veterans Park there was a fenced section of some Fallow Deer. They were laying down and blended in quite well with the scearnary. It was hard to get a decent picture of them.

It was hard to get a full shot of the Bennington Monument its so tall. I'm not sure of the actual height but I was told it's approximately 30 stories high. There is an elevator inside that will take you up higher. We didn't do that today. It was built in memory of the Soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War.

These two are of Brigadaire General Stark. An important figure in our countries fight for independence.

Winter Vacation

I was looking through old posts and I realized that I never posted any
pictures from my Winter Vacation in January. I went Royal Oaks in
Dundee Florida. It's about halfway between Tampa and Orlando I believe.
I went to visit my Uncle and Grandfather. They lived in a Mobile Home
Park. I was lucky the week I was there, it was in the 80's everyday
except for the last two but still in the 60's and sunny. That was a
nice change considering I was leaving 30's and snow at home.

The park was really nice. Very clean and well kept. Paved paths throughout,
everybody biked and walked. They had an outdoor pool and a jacuzzi as
well. I spent most of the week lounging poolside. It was entirely
relaxing and exactly what I needed. It was good to see my Grandfather,
he passed away about two weeks after I came home. It was sudden and he
wasn't sick at all until just before he passed. He was 97. I was lucky
to have gone when I did.

One day we did manage to go to a theme park, The
Cyprus Gardens. It was pretty there even though they weren't a lot of
flower in blossom. I think it starts full swing in February. They still
had shows and things going on so it was still busy.

I love this Butterfly Fountain.

This giant tiled urn is pretty cool. I wonder where I'd put that in my garden.

I even spotted a Gnome. He was in the Butterfly
Conservatory. There were beautiful plants, flowers and waterfalls all
built inside.

I especially loved the Giant Topiaries everywhere!

My Uncle took Gram pa on a water ride. Of course someone had to stay back and take the pictures. Ah shucks.

They also had a bit of an animal sanctuary too.

I'm thinking these retirees have it pretty good. This was a picture of the
activity board on one of the days. My kind of day! Though other nights
there was Bingo, Golf, Ladies Shopping day and even a band/music night.

There was also plenty of time for biking and raiding the nearby Orange and Grapefruit trees!
Retirement? I think I can handle it!

New Supplies

Last week Joann's was having a pretty good sale on new Spring/Summer fabrics and McCalls patterns at 99 cents! I think I went three times. It was crazy. These fabrics I didn't purchase at Joann's. These came from a newish Quilting shop in Williston called Strawberry-Rhubarb. Its a tiny shop but they carry Amy Butler and lots of other amazingly cute and modern prints. They also offer classes and a "Sew Night" time. It will be nice to have somewhere local to go for help on various sewing techniques.
It was hard to choose some fabrics there so I only got 1/4 yds of these four prints for now. I'll be going back there soon though as there are a few other things I'd like to get! I don't have the names of the particular fabrics with me but if anyone really wants to know just leave a comment. I love the Bunny one so much I had to have it in two colors. I think these cuts will be made into checkbook and eyeglass covers.. misc. things.

Also I finally got this drawer setup that comes with caster rollers for my scrapbooking paper. I only had some thin plastic envelopes to keep my paper in. They worked when I had a small stash but I've accumulated quite a bit more paper and the envelopes are just not cutting it. This makes more sense. Also it fits perfectly under my desk height counter top in the craft room. I can roll it out when I need it and roll it back in when I don't! I love things that are hidden out of the way. Plus each drawer is really a locking case. This will be handy when I go to my mom's to work on pictures with her.

I've also signed up for Wardrobe Refashion. I commited to the two month. The idea is make or refashion from what you have in your closet and not to buy new clothes. ! Lord knows I don't need any new clothes. There a ton of things that I have that can worked into something better not to mention the pile of mending I've got. We'll see how this works out. I think it's going to workout because I'm on a mission not to buy anything new. I joined Planet Fitness back in December and I'm really making the effort to eat healthier. I'm finally starting to see some results from that! I also have been holding off on starting any new sweater projects as well for the same reason. Lately I've been knitting for other people instead. I'll save those pictures and details for another post.

Sorry for the lack of posting here in blogland. I know theres at least a few of you that check in here once in a while to see what I'm been up to. I have lots of projects to share but it's a little late tonight to get any decent pictures. But I will say theres some knitting, rug hooking, crochet and other things to post about. Though the last couple of weeks my knitting has definately taken a back seat. Suddenly I'm loving my sewing machine again. I've been buying patterns and fabric up left and right. I'm also intending on joining Wardrobe Refashion! So there will be lots of crafting to see in the upcoming future. Stay Tuned!

Cocoa Swap package arrived!

I received my Hot Cocoa swap package.. all the way from Tricia in England! She sent me the cutest pig, Mr. SnootyKnickers.. some very yummy mint cocoa.. super yummy Malteasers, Natural Silk Aran, a little knitting notebook and some other sweet things. Thanks Tricia! I've been soo wanting to try this yarn out! I have enough for a scarf! Sweet.

What is your most memorable vacation? Where did you go? What made it memorable?

I think the most memorable vacation I had was a few years ago when my parents and I decided to visit Amish country in Ohio. At that time mom and dad still had their tagalong camper. We camped in a great little place right near the Amish area were were visiting, Charm Ohio. It was unusually humid that week but otherwise it was a great trip. The arts and crafts were amazing, wonderful fresh produce stands everywhere, the people were so nice and beautiful countryside. I really want to go back again. I think that was my most favorite and memorable vacation.

"Now that we're in the thick of 'Winter'... has your knitting changed to match the season? Are you moving on from dishcloths, and tank tops to afghans, hats and mittens? Has your yarn changed from silk or cotton to wool, superwash or heavier cottons?"

So far I don't think my knitting has changed. Even though it's the middle of Winter, for me in Vermont the cold will drag on and on until May. Even in May I'll be wearing light to medium weight sweaters. So thats like five more months of cold weather knitting. I knit socks year around,regardless of what fiber they are. I'm still planning more scarf/muffler/fingerless mits and hats in the next couple of months. I also have two sweater projects that are on going. One I would like to finish before Spring. It's about 75% done so it's it's definately doable. I start doing Winter in the late Summer so it seems most of the year I'm making cold weather things. I have been browsing ahead thinking of Spring/Summer knits. It's hard not to when the big pattern/yarn companies are coming out with their new stuff right now. But I haven't purchased anything or settled on anything in particular at this time.

Back from Vacation.

Well vacation is over and now it's back to work. Bleh! I don't have any pictures to post today at least none that are knitting or vacation related. I took my knitting with me on vacation. I packed four projects thinking I'd get so much done but I only managed to finish one thing, though I worked a bit on two other ones. I completed one sock that will probably be gifted to my dad Christmas 08'. Yeah for early Christmas knitting! Now I have a whole 11 1/2 months to finish the other one.

Hot Cocoa Swap Questionaire.

Cocoa:
1. What is your favorite way to drink cocoa? Prepared with milk? Water? from home made recipe or store bought?, In a tea cup, or big mug?

Most of the time I drink cocoa packets with hot water. I like to add some milk or half & half for a creamy taste. The packets are easy and quick. If I have time then I will make it homemade. Hot milk, cocoa powder and a little sugar. Also I like to add a candy cane to my cocoa..I love that peppermint chocolate combination. Now my all time real favorite way to drink cocoa is with a shot of Doctor McGillicudies and whipped cream! A little Christmas Hot Toddy for me!: )

2. Marshmallows or whipped cream?

I like both!

Yarn/Knitting/Crochet
1. What is your favorite type of yarn? In what colors?

I guess I tend to lean toward soft wools or wool blends in deep rich colors. Though I also like natural tones too.

2. Do you knit or crochet (or both)?

Mostly I only knit. The crochet needles only come out when I need to pick up stitches or fix mistakes.

3. What are your favorite type of needles, would you like to try something new?

I prefer circular or double points. I've pretty much abandoned my aluminum needles and use my wood or plastic ones.

4. Do you have a healthy supply of notions?

Yes I do, and about three chibi's. I'm not lacking in this dept.

5. What one thing do you keep thinking you need to buy for your knitting habit (outside of yarn)?

I really can't think of anything in particular. Through swaps I have acquired many items. I am usually on the lookout for unusual or odd looking accessories. I have been drawn to knitting lace more and more. Thats something on the new side for me.

6. What is your favorite 'quick knit/crochet' pattern (quick gratification)

There's a mitten pattern I use a lot. I like to modify it for finger mitts. I've used the pattern multiple times. Also I have used the "Classic Socks for the Family" by Melinda Goodfellow. I can't even count how many times I'ves used it now.

Miscellaneous
1. What is your favorite thing to do in the Winter?

Watch movies and knit with some cocoa at my side while it snows outside!

Cats
3. Do you get the 'winter blahs'?

Sometimes I find the month of January to be the longest.

Try to keep busy on my WIPS's and thinking about warm weather knits.

Getting my garden started.

I like chocolate (with or without nuts), anything peppermint or mint. I also love Jelly Belly jelly beans.

I'm not sure if I have a favorite board game, I like card games better.

Christmas Knitting

Well it's been a busy time here knitting away and sewing up gifts and goodies. For most Christmas has come and gone, but here it's on Saturday. It was postponed due to young nephew wouldn't be visiting until Saturday. In years past he's come down to my parents with his father on Christmas day. But that was after he had gifts at his Great grandmothers Christmas eve, gifts at his house Christmas morning, then to his maternal grandmothers later for lunch and gifts.. then finally my brother would drive the hour (one way) to get him and bring him to my mom's later in the day. The result a tired pooped cranky child who just wants to play with his new stuff! So it was decided to postpone the gift giving until all could be there and take our time and enjoy the day! Good idea I think.

We had snacks and card games at my mom's on Christmas day and we had our stockings, but that was all. Margaritas were made and rum and cokes were enjoyed. It was a nice quiet day. The best part, an extra 5 days of knitting/crafting time before the "BIG" day! Whoo hoo. Resulting in pics today.

We'll start with a couple of sewing projects. My nephews room was just decorated in a Camoflauge motif. I made him a throw pillow for his bed. It's a sturdy cotton canvas fabric that will stand up to some serious pillow fights and anthing else a six year old can do to it. Also is a "Purr Pad" ,I call them. I just sew a piece of fleece and a cotton backing together with a piece of batting in middle. I also sprinkle some loose home grown catnip inside. You lay them where you cat has decided to call home. I take Berkleys' when we travel somewhere and where ever I put it is where he lays, cause he knows it's his spot. I found some cute kitty fleece and had already purchased the coordinating quilters cotton in the same print which I used on the other side. It's for my moms cat, Doc. She's been asking for one. (Notice my model in the background).

In knitting news I finished the wool boot socks for my Dad! FINALLY. I wasn't sure if I was going to have enough green so I just did the toes in the blue.

Also I finally finished the Cashmere Feather and Fan scarf. I didn't knit all the skein like I intended. But its the length she wanted 48" and I was getting soo bored. Now I have a small ball left, which I think would make some pretty lace bookmarks. A good stocking stuffer idea for next year.

I also knit up some Fingerless mitts too. One in a Elann Peruvian Sierra and the blue in the Knitpicks Superwash Merino. I have to finish the other blue one still. But they go fast.

Wheew, I can't believe it's been so long since the last post. I blame Ravelry for that. If a post was equal to everytime I go to Ravely, there'd be volumes by now.
Well there's been plenty of knitting and some sewing going on. Trying to get ready for Christmas. But the elves can't seem to knit fast enough and the fabric is still sitting waiting to be cut, though it has been washed and pressed.
Mostly I have a couple of Christmas projects on the needles. But there's at least a couple more I'd like to cast on for yet. No pictures to share, : (.
I started a Cashmere scarf in the Feather and Fan pattern for my mom. It's on size 4needles and taking FOREVER to knit! I haven't measured the length of it but I keep weighing the skein. I didn't take an initial weight before I cast on but it was supposed to be 55grams and now it's 21grams. The pattern is soo easy and nearly mindless so you'd think it would go faster, guess I'm just slow. I was worried at first that the length was going to be kind of meager for one skein. But I think it's going to be plenty long enough at this point.
I'm working on a pair of boot socks for my dad as well. They started out being for my brother but they are 100% and I'm afraid his gf will not remember and toss them into the dryer. I'll make him another pair next year out of some superwash or something. At least if I gift them to my Dad, I know that Mom won't felt them up. She's good about hanging things to dry and asking how to wash it first.
I still want to knit my dad a winter hat with some ear flaps in some green yarn that will match the green scarf I knit him a couple Xmas's ago. I'm thinking that I will dedicate the rest of this week to the scarf and then I'll just start the hat.. I can motor on a hat in the round faster than I'm going on this scarf!
Did anyone else besides me take advantage of the Black Friday specials? I got a couple of items and they were both for ME! Whoo Hoo. I got a new set of anondized cookware that was a great price at Linen's N Things. Now I can part with my mismatched oddballs. But my best new toy yet is this pretty boy. Just in time for Holiday Cookie Making too! Its hard to see in this pic, but I got the Cobalt Blue one and it's sooo pretty. It's makes awesome Popovers! So light and fluffy can't wait to whip up some Oatmeal Orange Raisin cookies, and breads. I want to try some breads after the holidays.

Ahh Fall is in the air. This is one of my favorite times of the year. Everything is changing but in some ways it's staying the same. The air is criper (but not too cold yet,not for me), the leaves are coloring up (many still on the trees just new colors) the grass is still green and growing but slowly (but not so slow I can't get another mow in! bleck!) My flowers are still blooming but at a slower pace (at least until the frost kills them for good). Seems like things are just slowing down. Except for my knitting needles! Now those are picking up the pace. Moving faster and faster, but not fast enough. Not enough for all the "Want to knits" I've added to my list lately.

This is the time of the year when my mailbox fills up with catalogs full of potential Christmas gifts. Warm sweaters , fleece jackets and flannel sheets. Toasty and cozy stuff. They're all so tempting, everything from Eddie Bauer to LL Bean to Cabela's and back again. I can't get enough of these Fall/Winter catalogs. Ohh the mail lady left me a stack today! Make the hot chocolate and grab the wool afghan, I'll be on the couch a while browsing, looking, drooling and ear marking pages. Some things just tend to jump out at me more than others. Like certain knitted cardigans and pullovers. Some I think "I can totally knit/sew that!". So then I'm on a mission to find a pattern for it. Something maybe similar that I can modify or is close enough. But it's not just the pattern I have to hunt down but also the perfect yarn or fabric too. One item that has been bugging me for the last few days is a cabled cardigan from Eddie Bauer. I've been wanting to knit a cabled cardigan for myself for a while now. But I just haven't entirely settled on a certain pattern. Of course I LOVE this one! Just not the price so much. Also I've been finding that I'm less than impressed with store bought sweaters lately. Seems like what I expect the yarn to be has been dissapointing. The fiber isn't soft enough or it states wool cashmere nylon blend and it ends up being more like Nylon, some wool and maybe a hint of cashmere... and completely scratchy! So dissapointing when I can go and buy yarn with a 80/20 blend and it's SOFT. Not to mention cost is more reasonable or at least even. But of course there's nothing like instant gratification either. Here's a shot of the cardigan I love. It's the Open Cardigan Cable Sweater from Eddie Bauer.

I love this cardigan because:
1. It's cabled. What says Fall like a cabled cardigan?
2. It looks classic and modern at the same time.
3. I think it would look good with a skirt or jeans or dress pants.. whatever!
4. I like the idea of the wool cashmere blend. Soft but durable?
5. I love the transition of the cables into the open lacework on the yoke area. Very pretty.

I haven't seen another cardigan like this though I know I could probably modify a pattern and do any kind of lace work at the top. Also this comes in a deep green shade. I keep thinking I'd like a sweater in an Olive/dk. Green Heather shade.

Also another sweater thats moved itself from Catalog to swatch mode is the Jacket Deconstructed by Lion Brand Yarn. It's a free pattern from Lion Brand and I think you have to have/create an account to be able to print it. But hey it's free so what the heck.

I like this pattern because it looks super easy and I love the simple modern look it has. I think though I would like the front to be a little lower hanging perhaps. I have swatched up some Jo Sharp Rare Comfort Kid Mohair for this. It would have a nice light airy quality I think. Plus it's a stash yarn too. So kudos for that.

So it's these two projects that are really tugging on my brain and keeping me from finishing current WIP's.! I blame them for my lack of motivation on anything else. Like the baby hat that I need to have finished by this Sunday for a shower.
Anyone else completely distracted or in love with something new? Oh if anyone has a favorite cabled/aran cardigan pattern they'd like share I'd be so happy to hear it. !

Ok, so I finally finished my Sockapalooza socks!!! yeah! I'm posting a picture here as my receiver doesn't have a knitting blog. I sent these to Anne. I knit the Hourglass Sock pattern from Magknits. I was a pretty easy pattern even though I had to rip back the second sock umpteen times. Due to my lack of paying attention. But in the end they came out good and I was happy with them. I will definately do this pattern again.

So now that is done I've been working on some WIP's and a new sock for me. No new pics on that yet. I did also receive my Harmony needles.. Love them! I love those very pointy tips.. makes doing SSK and k2tog a snap. !

Busy Busy Busy

This last month has been too crazy. For about two weeks I was busy canning various types of pickles and salsa. The weather has cooled off and I've been busy doing outside home improvement. I've been knitting on my late Sockapalooza socks. After about 3 rip back episodes I'm finally a repeat and a half away from the toe! Finally they are almost done. Seems like these socks were the most uncooperative socks ever! It's not like the pattern was that complicated either, pretty easy actually.. easy to mess up.

I also picked up an old WIP project that I hadn't touched in months. Its a Turtleneck pullover in Silky Wool. So far I only have the back done up to the armhole dec., I cast on for the front.

I ordered some size 1 Harmony Knitpicks circulars. I haven't received them yet but so far on Ravelry I keep hearing good things.

Well today I leave you with my garden loot. This year I ended up with Yellow, Orange, Green striped, Purple and red tomatoes.

This week I received my package from my Sockapalooza pal. They are Great and fit like a glove!
They were knit by Shari! New socks and a new blog! She used the Seduction pattern from IK knits. Very cool as I had this pattern on my list... now I can see how it looks. Thanks Shari!

She also sent me some other goodies! Like a clam chowder mix, post cards from Nova Scotia.. (her home), salt water taffy (thats almost gone) and a really really really cool star fish!

slacking

I've been so slacking on my Sockapalooza's socks. They WILL be finished though and soon. I thought I'd get them wrapped up this weekend camping. But after a couple of drinks while waiting for the pig to roast I decided it wasn't in anyones best interest to knit under the influence of alcohol. So I never knit a stitch all weekend.. but I did motor away for a while on Monday. I need to finish because I'm NOT starting anything new until they are fini! Which is really hard with the new Fall IK tempting me. Plus I already have two projects I started in the Winter/Spring that would be great for Fall if I get them done.

I got nearly all my stash of yarn on Ravelry. I thought I had all of it listed, then I remembered another hideout of mine.

I forgot to take my camera to the Pig roast campout, so much for scrapbooking that. Next time I camp in Craftsbury I'm bringing an extra blanket or two... freakin' cold up there at night! Especially those late night/early twilight trips to the outhouse. I'm thinking the alcohol in my blood kept me from freezing totally!

I haven't got any new pictures to post. Just plugging away on my Sockapalooza Pal's socks and hoping (really hoping) to get them done by the deadline. It's gonna be tight!

It's kind of old news now but I see that the new sneakpeak of the Interweave knits issue is up! I'm really excited about this Fall 2007 issue. It's been a while since they've had one that there were actually more than one thing that I MUST knit. My subscription was up this Summer and I really debated renewing it. Seems like most of the patterns don't appeal to me or my body style. Well thats my personal view. But there are at least 3-4 sweater patterns I've got on my "to list" this issue. I say it's about time IK! Honestly the only reason I renewed my subscription was because Eunny is on board. I thought I'd give it one more year. I'm looking forward to see what she brings to the magazine. Some new ideas and new concepts.
I picked my first cucumber from the garden yesterday. The leaf lettuce is still going strong as well. I keep having to give it away. I think the "Deer Tongue" variety jumps up faster than anything I've planted before. Definately have to look for that next year! I haven't had to buy lettuce at the grocery for two months. My radishes didn't do much, all tops and no bottoms. My dad has the same problem.

I received my last package from my Secret pal yesterday! I found out that its Mia from "Way Past My Bedtime". ! Mia your the best. I loved everything you sent! Your sooo generous! She sent Cascade 220, a Chibi, 2 Denise extenders (soo needed, Thanks!), soap (I like to put these in with my yarn.. makes them smell good), choc. mint Altoids, a dishcloth (I love those), Sugar and Cream cotton (I can make my own dishclothes now),beads (lapis stones are my favorite!), sock yarn (cool colors, I love the lime w/ the dk. blue!), mini muffins (those are so yummy), Scarf Style (yeah!), artyarns yarn (did you see they have a pattern on the label for a belt, would be cute I think), cute chicken tin can (how did you know I collect little tin cans?), 3 spools of ribbon (love the colors) and some first edition Quilt Stamps (never saw those, not sure if I even had quilt stamps, too cool!). What a haul! Thanks Mia, you rock!

I've been slacking on posting lately. It's certainly not for a lack of projects to post on either!

First up, finished Monkey Sock! Yeah!!

Monkey Stats: Pattern from Knitty
I used one less repeat on the leg, but other than that I pretty much followed the pattern. I used size 2 circ's and Spunky Electic in Mahagany from the Yarn Aboard Swap mate Jennifer. I loved working with this yarn. Its a superwash wool and it really softened up after a wash and dry. The pattern was really entertaining. Easy to remember and it was just enough to keep me interested without being boring or complicated. I think there will be more Monkeying around in my future!

Next up is the amazing box of goodies I received from my Secret Pal. Let me just say that Secret Pal knows how to pack a box!

She sent me some fingering weight wool from Knit Picks and a book on Scandanavian Mittens/Gloves. Totally awesome for when I learn colorwork!!! I love all the colors too. I got some Wildfoote sock yarn which I have been wanting to try in a sweet teal/blue color! She also made the cotton crochet bag for me... I think the bag will make a cute "sock in progress" bag! Also theres a spool of cute ribbon and there was some sweets, but they didn't make it to the photo shoot. Now last but sooo not least.... she sent me a drop spindle and some Roving (which I've been itching to learn!) !! SP10 also sent some instructions and I have been playing with it a bit but I don't really have much to show so far. Anyway it was an awesome package!! Thanks SP10!

I have no new knitting progress or lack of progress pictures today. Well, I do have pictures but they are in my camera at home and I'm at work.

I received a package from my Secret Pal yesterday. I'll post all the juciy bits on that later with pictures. But I will say it was a very AWESOME package!

I've frogged about 3 seperate projects in the last couple of weeks. One of them being socks for my sockapalooza... which I'm having a rough start with. Mostly dumb errors on my part. But I may change the yarn I'm using and go on a differant path. Another frog was one the front of my brown alpaca/wool vest. I messed up the ribbing and stitch count. I hadn't gotten very anyway.

This last week the LYS had a sale on some Berroco Ultra Alpaca. The new colors are coming in for the Fall and they're making room! My kind of sale! I got some in Fern and Cobalt Violet. I have enough of the Fern to knit Ticuna from their free patterns site. I only purchased two skeins of the Cobalt Violet.. I'm thinking of mixing it with some other colors and felting up a bag of some sort. By the way, the greens are more darker in life.. the morning sun kinda washes it out... no that I'm complaining about the sun! Shine on!

I also got some Lorna's Laces Shepard Sock in the Purple Iris colorway on sale too! I'm thinking now I must've been on a Green and Purple kick.

Not much new on my Monkey Sock progress. I messed it up on my trip to Ohio and was so annoyed with it I hardly touched it at all! Nearly 24 hours cumulative time on the bus ride and no knitting to show for it. I just wasn't feeling the love for my knitting back I guess. When I got home I ripped back and picked up again. Now I'm on the heel. I'm just happy to be at the heel!

Last week before I left for the weekend I received another package from my Secret Pal.
Today I'm getting around to posting about it. Little late on posting... but I definately thanked them as soon as I got it! My sp sent me the Vogue Stitionary book. Which is very cool and is loaded with differant fair isle patterns. I love it and can't wait until I get a chance to practice with all the yarn she sent too! Theres a couple of skeins of Koigu Kersti and some chocolate bars. There were actually three bars but of that theres about one and a half left. I also got a sticky pad and some really pretty handmade stitch markers! Also not pictured but totally awesome non the less... were the special edition stamps with matching envelopes that were stamped on the day of issue. One was the Vermont State bird/flower and the other were the 4 stamp set of Cats. Very cool if your into stamp collecting! I have to admit that I've lost my enthusiasm for the new self-stick stamps. To me they're just fancy stickers. I like collecting the old ones better.

All talk and no new pictures

I have no new pictures to post of my progress... so I'll just tell about it instead. I've finished one sock of my Monkey socks so far. Looks awesome. I've started the second one and I'm maybe about a third done on the top so far.
I had to rip back my other sock of the Lorna's Laces that I had started. I messed up the pattern and there really was no fixing, so I frogged back to the cuff. I've restarted the pattern. I thinking maybe a lifeline wouldn't hurt on this pattern.
I started another new project... actually there are two new ones that I haven't blogged about. At work on break I've been working in a Ribbed Turtleneck Pullover in the Silky Wool. So far so good. It seems kinda lightweight for a wool/silk blend. I should've washed the swatch to see how it would bloom up.
Also I started a new Crewneck Vest in the Peruvian Sierra Aran from elann. I'm about ready to start shaping my armholes on the back. I've been motoring along on that. The pattern is a combination of one from an old Family Circle Knitting and an Interweave Knits issue.

So those are my new projects... now I'm gonna recap on some old stuff thats been hanging around too long. I was looking at my knitting pile this Winter/Spring and decided there were some things that could be frogged. One in particular is a sweater I've mentioned before. I bought the sweater kit at one of the local craft shows. I had completely drooled over the yarn at previous shows. I finally decided to splurge and purchase one of the kits. It's a mohair boucle handpainted yarn. It's really a gorgeous colorway.. called Mixed Berries... raspberry, blueberry and a tealish green. The pattern in the kit was for a roll neck with ribbed bottom and cuffs. At that time I wasn't a fan of the ribbing.. I was stuck on making all my cuffs and hems in the roll. So I modified the pattern... casted on, frogged, and casted on a few times before I finally had something I liked. However as I knitted the body in the round the colors began to pool and pool and pool and I liked it less and less. It languished for extended periods of time before I finally got as far as I did last winter. I felt like I HAD to finish it... that I'd come so far.. sleeves finally done and attached. So close to the neck area. But after being mere inches away from complete last May, it went back to the WIP pile again. Nearly a year ago now. Now after some time thinking about it, I've decided that the pooling is whats holding me back. I don't like it. At least not on a sweater. I know if I finish it, it will only lay in the closet and never see the light of day either. I think it's time to let go of the sweater and the guilt that I should finish it because it was a "kit and thats what it was supposed to be." The pooling only happened on the body and not on the sleeves. I'm wondering how it would be differant if I tried it on straights and maybe at a differant gauge. Either way I love the yarn, love the colors but this pattern isn't working for me!

I got toally spoiled with a 4lb. jug of Jelly Belly jelly beans!!! A skein of handpainted Peace Fleece, Opal and Regia sock yarns and a mitten pattern to go with my Peace Fleece!! WOW.
Thanks Secret Pal you rock! The colors are perfect! I'm really going to have to watch those handfuls I grab of jelly beans.... they are soooo addicting!

I picked up some deals on ebay last week......a ten pack of Jaeger Trinity in Cornus and a ten pack of Rowan All Seasons Cotton in Purr.. yummy Spring colors. Makes me think of Easter eggs.

Also my Monkey sock is coming along. I'm working on the heel now. I had to do one less of the repeats to accomidate my leg.

Last Saturday I went the LYS and checked out what she had left for her 1 day only Winter sale. I really didn't expect to find much as I arrived only 20 min before she was closing for the day. However I did manage to come home with 11 skeins of Classic Elite Skye Tweed in Dungeon which is charcoalish black tweed. Also I snagged one last skein (in this colorway) of Noro Big Kureyon in this amazing mix of colors. It looked so loney... I couldn't leave it behind!

Also sock progress.. or lack of it. I started another sock.. in some yarn I got from a swap in the Monkey pattern from Knitty. For once I'm actually knitting something that is currentish in the blog world. Imagine that. So far I have only accomplished one repeat but I think its looking cool.
I ran into a snag on my Columbine Peak socks... I had a moment of stupidness and instead of starting on row 7 of the chart (where I had left off the last time I touched it) I started at row 1... then after about 4 rows I wondered why all of a sudden it was looking strange. DUH! I figured it out and ripped back those rows but with the yarnovers and such I just couldn't seem to make it look right. I was only 1 1/2 repeats into the pattern anyway.. so I ripped all the way back to the ribbing and now I have to start it again. Maybe I should use lifelines on my socks! At least I hadn't gotten too far.. and what I did get done knit quick. So thats ready to start again. I definately learned something from that lesson.

Secret Pal 10 Questionaire.

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
Mostly I knit with wool or any blend of wool and a natural fiber. I've knit a little with cotton. I'm not a fan of novelty yarns or 100% acrylics. I love hand dyed yarn. Self striping is ok too.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
I use tall narrow basket for the straights. My circulars store in the Denise Case they came in.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I've been knitting since 1997. I learned in a 3 session course at the Local Joann's Fabrics Store. I haven't learned yet how to do Fair Isle or Intarsia. I only stripe if I do multiple colors. I've done lots of differant stitch work. I have done any lace work but I do have yarn and patterns for it and look forward to starting something for Christmas this year. I would say maybe Advanced Beginner or borderline Intermediate because I havent done multi-color work.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
Yes. Amazon

5. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products, etc.)
I like woodsy, floral, food scents. Really most anything.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
I like chocolate with or without nuts. Milk and Dark Chocolate. My favorite is chocolate and peanut together! I also love Jelly Belly Jellybeans.. any flavor and anything peppermint or spearmint flavored.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
Other crafts I enjoy are cross stitch, embroidery of most kinds, sewing. I haven't learned to spin. I have thought about getting a drop spindle and try to learn. I've become a Do-it-yourselfer around the house. Woodworking and building and remodeling have taken up a lot of my spare time lately. I like to garden and cook as well.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
My computer plays MP3's. I like country and classic rock mostly. But I will listen to others as well.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?
My favorite color is Blue (any shade). I like darker or rainbow shades including woodsy tones too, greens and browns. Lately a lot of Brown and blue or pink combos have found their way to my stash.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
I am single, one cat and no kids.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
yes, I would wear a poncho, just havent knit one yet. I knit hats then never wear them. I love mittens and scarves.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
things i can get a lot of wear out of, sweaters, vests. I seem to be knitting a lot of socks and mittens too. I also knit scarves because they are quick and easy.

13. What are you knitting right now?
I have a sock started from a Secret Pal 9 package. I started a new sweater as well.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
Yes I love them.

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
I have the Denise circ. set and since I cant use my aluminum straights without my wrists getting sore. Guess I prefer circs. now. Except for my wood size 9 straights. They dont bother me. Bamboo are ok, but I think wood are better. I just started knitting my socks on circulars using either Addis Turbos or Knit Picks circs. I love socks on circs now.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
Yes to both.

17. How old is your oldest UFO?
2 years at most, but its near done.

18. What is your favorite holiday?
Christmas

19. Is there anything that you collect?
The question should read "Is there anything you DON'T collect?"... I collect stamps, postcards, tart burners, dishes of all kinds, baskets, antiques... all kinds of stuff.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
I subscribe to Interweave Knits. I've never knit with Koigu or Wildfoote sock yarn.

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
I would like to learn Intarsia and Fair Isle.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
Yes. I wear a size 8 womens med. width shoe and sock.

Did someone say SNOW!

Yesterday and last night was our turn (North East) to experience the snow that everyone else seems to have gotten already.... Here's what I woke up to this morning.

This is from my deck... I did shovel out the car on Wednesday.. can't tell that now.

This is before I ventured outside... my front steps... somewhere.. there was A LOT of drifting last night.. 4ft+ in some areas on my lawn...

I had to walk around to get my shovel on the back deck where I left it yesterday from shoveling out around the bird feeders... I couldn't open the back door it drifted up so high.

Berkley really really thought he wanted to go outside... well he went after I shoveled off the back deck a bit... but where he thought he was going I don't know...there was no way he was going to venture over those snow banks...
Now he's wishing he stayed inside.. the batteries in the camera died so I missed the shot of him turning around and heading into the door... thats as far he went... first step! Smart Cat.
Last night my butt stayed HOME! This is what I worked on in front of the tv.. my new sock .

This weekend I finally finished the mate for a sock I started last year! Well it only took me less than two weeks to get the mate done this time. The second was done on my circ's. I was definately feeling the love for these from the beginning.... all the way to the end. Now I can't wait to get started on another pair.. of course after I finish my brothers boot socks.

I got home yesterday to find my last package from my secret pal. : )
I totally got spoiled! Check out the stitch markers, chibi, stitch counter, note card, sock blocker keychain, Lantern Moon knitting bag, gnome, jelly bellies (score) and cool yarn from Spunky Eclectic in Leaf Peep. Soo cool! Oh and Deborah.. (now that I know who you are).. just wanted to let you know I've resurrected a WIP thanks to the "Socks on Circs" book you sent me for Christmas. I've gotten around to starting the second sock of last years socks and I'm past the heel already thanks to the speediness of my new needles. No ladders so far! I'm really enjoying knitting my sock right now! Thanks to you.

Yes, I finally finished my dads Christmas socks of 2006/07. He was kind enough to model them for me. I still have one more pair to finish.. I swear I will. However in the meantime in my eagerness to start something new... And complete a WIP I started the mate to some socks I started last year for myself. However I'm using the socks on two circs's book my Secret Pal gifted me. So far so good. It was easy to get going.. took only one try. I'm still on the cuff. It's slow going as I have succumbed to the flu/cold/crap that's going around.
PS. Thanks to dad for modeling his socks that thankfully cover his "Ugly Step Sister Feet". : )

So if I get my tail in gear the next couple of nights I could have finished socks! Imagine that. There hasn't been much knitting going on this week. Just a few stolen moments here and there with socks. I've been good and I haven't started any new projects yet.. though it's tempting. Next week I plan to finally finish painting the living room and hallway, and parts of the kitchen. There may or may not be any knitting news there. I did blow off the dust and use the sewing machine for about a half hour or so this weekend.

Swaps Arrive!!

Thursday was GREAT mail day! I got two packages. One from my Secret Pal and another from the Coffee and Yarn swap on Swap Bot.
First the coffee and yarn swap... I got two bags. One from Africa and the other from Guatamala. I can't wait to try them out. I also got two skeins of Peace Fleece in a blue/green color combo. Totally cool.

Then the other package I received was from my Secret pal. She sent me "Socks soar on Circular needles", a set of size 1 Addis circs, two skeins of Lornas Laces in Tahoe colorway. Which soo rocks as I've been itching to learn this technique. So now I have all I need to get started. Except maybe for the extra 8 hands I need to finish all that I need to first! I also got this cool lace scarf pattern based on a cats life... so cute. I can't decide which one I like best. Also I got a super mini garden Gnome. Secret Pal, its like you have this Gnome theme going on for me.. its so cool I love it! He came with a mini Gnome information book. He's just the right size for my house plants. They need Gnomes to look after them too! THANKS SECRET PAL YOU'VE ROCKED MY WORLD AGAIN!

Santa came... but no help from the elves!

Santa came and left me some great knitting gifts. However the elves were short handed and didnt make it to help with last minute knitting. Gifts of socks on sticks were given... and pondered over "How are we supposed to wear these? and Are we supposed to finish them?" My dad asked if he was going to have to knit the toe himself? (He who doesn't knit) I said "Sure if you like.. I'll teach ya !". He opted not to learn.. so socks on sticks were returned to the knitter for finishing process. Oh well.

Well Santa left me some 100% Merino fingering weight.. so I can dye it with my nephew using the Kool-aid process. I also got some solids to work in on toes and heels... a cool new book and #2 circ's to try the socks on circs method.. after of course sock gifts are completed. I'm tired of knitting for others.. I want to knit for ME! I'm a bit selfish with my knitting.... I can't help it.

Well the Christmas knitting has fallen behind. I don't see 100% completed socks for Monday. There may be gifts of socks on sticks made. But hey they put meat on a stick so why not socks?
I'm holding off on the toes of my dads socks... so I can have him at least try them on and check the length. He's got those ugly step sister feet ( I call them anyways) so I'd prefer him to try them before I start the toe decrease. I figure I can finish the toes Christmas afternoon. My brother on the other hand is further behind. He has one sock with no heel and no foot. I figure tomarrow I'm off and nothing else to do so I'll dedicate my time to getting his second sock up to speed. My mom has one scarf completed that just needs a little blocking.
I'll be so happy when all this holiday gift knitting is OVER. Then I'm gonna knit socks for ME, in some of the cool yarn I've been receiving from all these cool swaps! I'm totally itchin' to knit with it! Plus I think Santa is bringing my circ's in size 2... so I can try socks that way. !!

Today in the mail I got my winnings from the drawing for the State Fairalong from Larissa. She sent me some really yummy candies, a skein of Lumpy Bumpy Yarn in the Black Cherry colorway... so pretty, 2 skeins of Katia Buffalo in a cool greyish brown color, very cool and a sample of Stash tea in Chocolate Hazelnut. Its cool that she sent me this flavor because in the grocery store I would definately be skeptical about trying/buying chocolate tea. But this sample I will try. I'm curious to find out how strong the chocolate flavor is. The bulkly yarn will go perfect with my down winter coat.. though I'm thinking of maybe a muffler rather than a scarf. The coat is fitted around the shoulder and neck area and doesn't leave much room for a bulky scarf underneath. But a muffler might be just enough. I love the browns and pinks together!

alas he had no postcard to share but I sent him packing with one.

We laughed, we shared, we told jokes... we drank...got drunk... He passed out on my couch
as any weary land bound sea traveler would...

I woke him up and got one final picture of him with my crew before he left........

He is now refreshed and new booty aboard for travels far far away! A good time was had by all. (Especially Sir Drake.. man can he drink!) He gave me his digits.. said he might by stop my way again. I said "My couch is always free for weary silver tongued devils such as yourself good Sir".

whats been going on?

I finally finished the Larissas' Meathead along hat. Here it is. I just embroidered a flower on a piece of felt. I was going for a postage stamp look. Its hard to tell that in the picture. I think it would look equally cool with a vintage brooch pinned to it as well. My mom thought a wool/plaid skirt pin would look nice attaching the felt square to the hat. I meant to search around for one for this shot but it never happened. Anyway its a completed item. Yeah!

I was looking through some past posts and I mentioned the Gnome I painted mom for Mothers's Day.. here he is. Along with him is a flea market of this Summer. I mint shape sugar bowl that matches my new teapot perfectly. This Gnome is much smaller than the larger one that I've shown in the past. This guy stands maybe 12" or so high. A far cry from the nearly 2ft giant on my back deck. I gave this one green eyes (eyes of the forest) and a green shirt, just to mix it up a bit. He almost looks Christmasy. Speaking of the Giant Gnome, he's currently in the shed hybernating. When the cold and snow is gone he'll be back. Until then he's watching over the rest of my ceramic/garden/clutter/people/animal menagerie in my shed.

It's been a crazy week and I just haven't had a chance to post. I've got plenty to blog about but no pictures. Mostly I've been plugging away on Christmas gifts. I finished a scarf last night. I'm about halfway on a pair of socks for my dad.. and one sock for my brother is half done. Still a mate to go for my nephew. Doesnt seem like I accomplished much this week on that. I participated in the second Meatheadalong so that took up some time. I'm about done my Christmas shopping, minus a couple of gift cards.

I'll get some shots of my WIPS and post later on.

Secret Pal 9 Strikes!!!!!

I was soo excited to get a package tonight from my Secret Pal!!! I was a little concerned at first cause the package was soaked on one corner... but thanks to the bubble wrap lining nothing got damaged. Luckily the Siamese Security Agent was on the job to inspect. Thank goodness cause check out the loot!!!

My pal got my the new edition of the book of Gnomes!! I've wanted this book since I was a kid.. and just never got around to getting it. Everytime I would see a Gnome I would remember this book that I only signed out of the library a trillion times! So the point where the librarian would say "Michelle, just brought this book back last week. Let someone else have a turn." : )
I love the pictures and Gnome information. If I see one in the woods I need to know these things. For years I looked for them... still looking. This book makes them seem soo real and possible.I almost ordered this book from my book club this weekend but I forgot all about it! Everytime my ceramics teacher gets a new Gnome to paint.. I snatch it up first! I painted one this Summer for my mom, I'll have to look for the picture. I can't wait to show the book to my 5 year old nephew! Well not to overshadow the rest of my goods. I got some gorgeous yarn from Cherry Tree Hill. It's perfect cause I have a sweater in my WIP pile that is nearly the exact colorway and I get off my butt and finish it I could have matching socks too! Also in the loot pile was a a Black (my favorite color of sheep ) Sheep measuring tape from Lantern Moon! Soo cool. A really pretty bookmark, that I almost didn't see in the book and awesome Gnome stationary and a notecard. The stationary is such a coincidence because I was just taking some pictures of my too large, lifetime love, obsession collection of stationary. Its true I love stationary... and I have some very old pieces of stationary from when I was in grade school. Leftover envelopes and sheets of paper... and I know where each came from and theres a story to be told behind all. More on that later...
But Secret Pal you rock! Thanks Secret Pal!! I hope you get spoiled too!!

Stash Enhancements

Today I thought I'd post about my new stash enhancements in the last couple of weeks or so. I got the latest copy of Interweave Knits of course. Some neat patterns but nothing I absolutely must knit right now. What I have really enjoyed is the new book Modern Classics by Louisa Harding. There is definately some things in there are now at the top part of the "to-do" list. Especially the sweater on the front. I was searching through my stash to see what I had for possibilities for this pattern. I found that the gauge requirements of the pattern and my Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool is the same! I think I have enough too for the my size. Of course I havent swatched yet but hopefully I can find something in the stash that will work! Of course none of this is happening until AFTER Christmas. Or at least when my presents are finished.
Also I signed up to knit a Meathead for Larissa which I will be starting this weekend and probably finishing. More on that as it happens.

Also new to the stash are 10 skeins of Himilayan Sari Silk yarn. I got it from ebay. Turns out the seller was right here in my area. I able to drive over and pick it up and save on the shipping costs! Then theres 18 skeins of Elanns Sierra Aran in Blackberry Wine, 1 skein in Garnet and 13 skeins in Walnut. I plan to use the Blackberry Wine in a cabled pullover or cardigan... so I had to make sure there would be enough. I'm glad I got it when I did, that color is soldout. The Walnut is gone too, thats for a cabled V neck vest. It will go so nice with some blouses I have. I thought I'd use the Garnet (which looked darker on line) with any leftovers and make a scarf or mittens to match. The three colors looked good together online.. but now the Garnet seems kinda bright next to the others. I guess I thought it would be more of a Raspberry color. Oh yeah and cause I had finally spent enough at Elann I qualified for the $50.00 credit, 17 skeins of the Blackberry was FREE !!! How awesome is that! Oh and I used some bonus points from my book club and got the book for $12.00. Christmas is around the corner.. I have to economize ( and I dont feel guilty this way ) .

Still making Socks

I'm still plugging away on the socks for Christmas. I'm slow when it comes to socks.. or they seem slow anyway. My dad, brother and nephew are getting some simple basic designs for socks. I find that any pattern takes me forever to do with socks. Mostly cause I never get the chart/pattern memorized. I have to keep checking every row or few stitches to see what I'm supposed to be doing. Slowly they take form.
I started a worsted weight wool boot sock for my brother on Friday. I got past the cuff today.
I started the second sock for my dad. The other one at the heel waiting for me to pick up stitches. I thought that by working on them both I could keep the second sock syndrome at bay. Today is all about the cuff on that sock too. I cast on and did the cuff in the size 1 needles for those. When that is done I can maybe at least cast on for a mate for my nephews.

Christmas Socks and Stocking Along Update

Well Happy Halloween to everyone. I made some serious progress on my stocking for Lauras' stocking along. I finished the toe and seamed up the back leg! I added a braided loop to hang with but that was after I took this picture. I'm think I'm just going to wet block it a bit. I'm happy with the way it came out. Its huge, but perfect for filling with stuff.

I also made some progress on dads Christmas socks in the Knit Picks New England Foliage. I've gotten to the heel. I'm much happier with the ribbing on this sock. It's more snug and stretchy. I used size 1 needle and a K2P2 rib. As opposed to the usual k1p1 rib that always seems to stretch out. Right now I'm carrying along some wool/nylon to reinforce the toe and heels. The yarn is 100% merino wool. Hopefully they will hold up to my dad.
I also finished short sock that I experimented with knitting entirely on size 1's. They were meant to be for me but they are a little tight and I should've added more length to the top. I think instead of ripping it out I will just give these to my nephew instead. His foot is smaller and a bit shorter. But the gauge is more snug and it won't be long before he grows into them. I was going to make him socks for Christmas anway so now I'm just ahead of the game. I dont think he'll care that they are shorter. They are more like a slipper sock now.

New Craft Ideas?? You tell me

I'm a pretty crafty person. I'm not quite Martha Stuart, but I have a ton of her books and back issues of Living magazine that I just can't seem to part with. I've been known to hunt flea markets and lawn sales looking for a unique treasure. Something that I could incorporate into my home somewhere and give new life.
I stumbled onto this link this morning and I just had to share.

TAMPON CRAFTS get them while they're hot! I kid you not. Who knew? I didn't. I'm not sure if they are funny or distrubing. However I just cant see myself sitting down with my 5 yr old nephew making Christmas Crafts out of Tampons. I just know that would follow a slew of questions...

"Aunt Michelle what are these?" "Tampons, Nephew Tyler." "What are tampons? What are your making with them?"

It just goes down hill from here I know it! Can you imagine opening the latest issue of Martha Stuart Living and seeing holiday crafts with Tampons.. I dont think so. Or how about going to a Christmas Bazarr where there is plastic canvas and little old ladies everywhere and seeing holiday ornaments on display made from OB or Kotex.. (the thought of that cracks me up) I wonder if people really have made these things. These almost seem like something you'd see on late night tv.

I also have to admit to some cheapness here as well. There's no way that I'm going to waste a perfectly good tampon on the making of blow gun! See for yourself, make your own decisions... and answer this question " Will you be making any Tampon Crafts this holiday season?"

This is one of my favorites. He is cute in a weird funny way.

My brother used to make homemade potato and blow guns when we were kids. He never raided my moms Tampon stash to do it though..never thought of it... I can almost imagine him doing it then (due to the mean boy humor) but now I'm sure I won't be seeing my brother sporting this look at Halloween.

Aching Back and Finished Socks

How was your weekend? Mine was interesting enough. It snowed Friday night. It started out with rain. I went to pick up Chinese takout, got back at 5pm and it had just started to turn to snow. By the time I left mom and dads at 7pm there was nearly 6" on my car and the road. Of course there are no plows on the State/Local trucks yet. So it was a slow and slippery ride home. Unfortunately I didnt get a picture as it was gone by the time I got up the next day.

Saturday was spent re-laying my laminate flooring and undercutting door jams. Something the ex-contractor never got around to doing. Still on going reoccuring nightmares of contractor from hell. Due to most of the day spent on my hands and knees my body was in rough shape on Sunday and today. I thought coming back to work and sitting here would be restful. But I cant seem to get comfortable in this chair. Guess I was better off at home moving around.

Sunday some knitting got done. I finished the toe on my Stocking Along Stocking. Now it needs a seam and blocking. I also stitched the toe closed on a sock that was intended for me but looks like a candidate for Christmas gift list. No pictures today.

Knitters Tea Swap arrived!

On Monday my box was waiting in the mail for me from Lisa ! I got some cool Big Tex Jelly Beans ( tis' true what they say about everythings bigger in Texas). If I'd known my swapper was in Texas I would've asked for "1 live Cowboy to be shipped overnight". Oh well. Guess I'll have to live with only the yummiest Belgian Milk Chocolate with Lavender and pretty Sock yarn from Hill Country Yarns. : )
Of course all incoming mail, bags, boxes and packages must be "A-ok'd" by the Siamese Security System Technician. I think he works secretly for Homeland Security or something. Be nice if they would send a paycheck too once in a while.

Must have checked out ok because I was allowed to continue on . Check out the size of them Beans!

Today I no pictures of anything. But I will update. I've made it to the toe on my Manos Stocking. Then I started decreasing it and realized I messed it up.. so now I'm gonna rip back and redo the toe. I hope to finish this weekend. Also I made it to the toe on my Socklet too. I plan to start another couple of projects to leave at work for breaktime in my desk. Just a small one or two.
Yesterday in the mail I got "Modern Classics" by Louisa Harding. This book is soo nice. I cant wait to cast on for something. I'd post a picture but Blogger wont let me!

Secret Pal 9 Questionaire.

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
Mostly I knit with wool or any blend of wool and a natural fiber. I've knit a little with cotton. I'm not a fan of novelty yarns or 100% acrylics.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
I use tall narrow basket for the straights. My circulars store in the Denise Case they came in.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I've been knitting since 1997. I learned in a 3 session course at the Local Joann's Fabrics Store. I haven't learned yet how to do Fair Isle or Intarsia. I only stripe if I do multiple colors. I've done lots of differant stitch work. I have done any lace work but I do have yarn and patterns for it and look forward to starting something for Christmas this year. I would say maybe Advanced Beginner or borderline Intermediate because I havent done multi-color work.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
Yes

5. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products, etc.)
I like woodsy, floral, food scents. Really most anything.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
I like chocolate with or without nuts. Milk and Dark Chocolate. My favorite is chocolate and peanut together! I also love Jelly Belly Jellybeans.. any flavor and anything peppermint or spearmint flavored.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
Other crafts I enjoy are cross stitch, embroidery of most kinds, sewing. I haven't learned to spin. I have thought about getting a drop spindle and try to learn. I've become a Do-it-yourselfer around the house. Woodworking and building and remodeling have taken up a lot of my spare time lately. I like to garden and cook as well.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
My computer plays MP3's. I like country and classic rock mostly. But I will listen to others as well.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?
My favorite color is Blue (any shade). I like darker or rainbow shades including woodsy tones too, greens and browns. Not a fan of neons.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
I am single, one cat and no kids.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
yes, I would wear a poncho, just havent knit one yet. I knit hats then never wear them. I love mittens and scarves.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
things i can get a lot of wear out of, sweaters, vests. I seem to be knitting a lot of socks and mittens too. I also knit scarves because they are quick and easy.

13. What are you knitting right now?
Now I have two sweaters going, 1 sock, 1 stocking and I started about 3 rows of a sweater vest.

I have the Denise circ. set and since I cant use my aluminum straights without my wrists getting sore. Guess I prefer circs. now. Except for my wood size 9 straights. They dont bother me. Bamboo are ok, but I think wood are better. I knit my socks on wood dbl. only cause i havent learned to do socks on circs. But i want to.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
Yes to both.

17. How old is your oldest UFO?
2 years at most, but its near done.

18. What is your favorite holiday?
Christmas

19. Is there anything that you collect?
The question should read "Is there anything you DON'T collect?"... I collect stamps, postcards, tart burners, dishes of all kinds, baskets, antiques... all kinds of stuff.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
I subscribe to Interweave Knits. I'd like to check out "Socks soar in Circular Needles".. maybe they wont take sooo long on circs. to knit. I've never knit with Koigu, Lornas Laces or Wildfoote
sock yarn.

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
I would like to learn Intarsia and Fair Isle.

Yes. I wear a size 8 womens med. width shoe and sock.

Well this weekend I got a lot further along on my stocking the Mistletoes Knitalong. I got past the heel and its smooth sailing to the toe! I think my stocking has a definate country cabin feel to it. I call it my Scrap Stocking.

Also I worked some on my Socklette... past the heel and onto that toe as well.
I packed the box for my Knitters Tea Swap. That box is full! I will ship that this week and get it off to her. I hope she likes it. Its my first swap so it's possible I went a tad overboard... maybe not. Either way it was a blast shopping and I couldn't stop putting goodies in the box!

The Big E! Warning! Lots of Pictures.

Last Saturday I went to the Big E. What is the Big E you ask.. only the largest fair in New England. It's located in West Springfield Mass. I went on a bus trip with family for the day. I've always wanted to attend the Big E and couldn't pass up the opportunity to go.
We left early and didn't get into the grounds until about noon. The fair was huge and packed is truly an understatement. I can't remember seeing so many people at one time.
I think the best way to describe the Big E is its a combination of fair, craft show and Early American History (complete with original buildings and people in costumes). How cool is that?

After seeing this sign we were in a crawl of traffic for another hour! This was several miles awayw from the fair. Just an idea of the masses en route to The Big E! (to enlarge any pictures just click on them, for those unfamilier)

Inside the "Vermont Building" were banners and lots crafts/Artisans I recognized. The building was packed, you couldn't move!

Here is the outside of the Vermont Building. Each New England state had its own building and I they appear to be replicas of that states capital. Very cool!

I can't remember the name of this but it's an automated orchastras. It was neat to watch. I saw at least a couple of them on the grounds.

This race game for kids was the coolest. I wish this was at the fair in my area. I know it would be soo popular with all the NASCAR fans!

At 5pm promptly there was a Mardi Gras parade. Complete with an eight Mule Team!

Old WIPS

It's that time of the year again. The time when air gets cooler, the grass grows slower and the leaves start to fall. You know that soon it will be time to reunite with your heavier sweaters and flannel sheets. For me it becomes a time to reunite with my WIP. Time to dig to the bottom of the pile in the knitting basket. Get the pattern and notes out and try to figure where I was and wonder why I didnt jot down what I was doing the last time I worked on it. It would be so helpful if I could get myself into that habit. Someday.
During the Summer months my knitting tends to languish in the baskets scattered around the house. A partially finished sweater here, three or fours rows of something started there, perhaps half a sock somewhere, pattern MIA. They are scattered and oh so neglected. They sit for weeks and months alone. All the I still shop for yarn and new patterns. But dont put the new yarn in the same basket as an old wip... there could be some jealousy because of all the new guys in town.
Well come Fall I start to dig out the old guys and wonder "how come I havent finished this one? I could wear it now." Interest is renewed... romance rekindled.. the love affair starts again. Currently there two such loves right now. Lopi Pullover and Mohair Boucle Raglan.

Still Life and Sock Gnome

I'm so happy, I feel like I finally got out of my knitting slump! I have a sock and a Christmas Stocking that are just flowing happily along! FINALLY! I was thinking I might have to see some sort of "Knitting Therapist" or something. First up is my Mistletoe along stocking. I'm using a pattern from Holiday Handknits that I have modified so far. It is knit back and fourth then seamed down the back. So far its motoring right along.

Next is my other sock that I started last night. Its knit with some Fortissima Colori that I got from Elann.com. I only bought single skeins of a bunch of differant colors. I know I can make a pair of kids socks with just one ball. I'm thinking just some short socks for from just one ball. I dont know what color this is called but it reminds me of Autumn so I grabbed it first. I thought I would let the Gnome model it. I made him a few Summers ago in my Ceramics class. This year he has spent the Summer guarding the back door.

New Swaps/Alongs and New Wheels

I don't have any real pictures to post. Only a couple things I joined recently. I joined the Knitter's Tea Swap. Should be fun. I love tea and yarn. How can you go wrong?

I have also joined Laura's Mistletoe Along. This will be my first "along". I plan on making a striped stocking in the leftover Manos yarn using the Handknit Holidays Stripped pattern as at least a guide. I've got all these little balls of leftovers from an afghan I made. I think it will look cute and countryish to hang for Christmas. I intend to keep this stocking for myself. I've been sort of collecting homemade stockings for myself. I have a couple others that I sewed using jewel colored velvet fabric with the cuff done in a gold or silver Lame. They turned out soo pretty and look nice just hanging them where ever. On a door knob, a hook, all over the house. I love stockings. I'm definately excited about this along. It will be cool to add a knitted one to my collection.

I also joined the SP9 too. There isn't much to say about that yet. It really hasn't started yet.
This last Friday I picked my new/used wheels. I had to retire the 93' Subaru Impreza.. transmission issues and other things (needed some serious body work) . The cost was just more than the car was worth. I will miss that car along with all the bells and whistles it had. Namely the automatic car starter! Such a treat here in the North East. My new ride is a 99' Chevrolet Cavalier. My first American Car. She is in mint shape and drives (and looks) new. I'm happy so far. The real bonus here is that my brother would never work on my Subaru or other foreign cars I've had. He would say he didn't have the experience or knew enough about them to fix anything. He is a "Chevy" man all the way. So I asked him, "if I buy this Cavalier you'll fix it if anything breaks, right?".... he said " I guess so". No excuses this time! At this time is runs great but you know the way it is with cars. Also I made an appointment for the automatic car starter installation... Winter is coming.. what's a girl to do?

The Good News and the Bad News

Ok, so I went to the fair last night and checked on my stuff. I found my jam and I won 3rd Place! Yeah Yellow Ribbon for me and a $2.00 premium. Then I tried to locate my Dahlia's and they could not be found. I asked one of the attendents and she said they didn't win a ribbon and that either they died and had to be thrown out.. or they weren't even added to the judging if I didn't have the correct amount of blooms on them. So after much discussion of the vagueness of they rules and criteria in the handout.. it's probably the later that happened to them. So the flower entry didn't work out for me this year. Next year I'll know a bit more about it.
There must have been a run on Yellow Ribbons cause my dad won TWO as well! He always enters his Horseradish and usually some sort of vegetable. This year it was Red Potatoes. I can't pick up my stuff until next week. But at least the rest is done!

Tomarrow I go to the fair and see how my Blackberry Jam and Dahlias have done. I'm going to try to remember my digital camera so I can post it. Things have been nuts here. Still working on home improvement. I finished the wainscotting on the end wall in my den/living room area. I also got the new ceiling lights up.. wired and working! I still need to touch up the ceiling and beams and work on the other walls. I haven't done anything yet with the hole in my kitchen wall yet. I just haven't had the chance. I found out my transmission in my car is dying. So I have to find something else. It just doesn't seem worth it to bother fixing it when they said it could upwards in cost as much as $1500.00! I was hoping to get a couple more years out of it ... NOT gonna happen! So thats been stressful to say the least. I HATE CARS! At times like this you think that it would be easier to live in the city where at least there is public transportation. Even car pooling is a pain out here.. thanks to car issues and home improvement projects I'm on another self imposed yarn diet. Probably for the best considering I've stash enhanced all Summer.
So for crafty news... I started a new project but haven't got much to show for it. I cast on for a knit vest with a free pattern from Interweave Knits. I haven't gotten far enough to say if I like it yet or not. Also I wanted to show the cool homemade soaps I got from Etsy.com . I thought they would make some cool gifts to add to some knitted soap cozies. The soaps are from Gudonya. The Rosemary Geranium keeps teasing me, mostly cause its been sitting on my desk for a few days.. might have to sample it. If your not familier with Etsy its a site for selling/buying handmade products. I only just found it back this Spring. But there is some really cool and unique stuff on it. The Rosemary Geranium soap reminds me of sherbert. I also got Pear Glace and that smells soo good too. Its light and soft. I figured I could try them and perhaps order some more for Christmas. Yes I'm already thinking about it.. and have been doing a little shopping here and there for it as well. I can't wait until last minute. I like to be ready and not have to do last minute running around. Not to mention it doesn't hit the wallet so hard when you spread it out over the year.

On Friday I took my State Fair Along entry to enter for judging. I won't know until I visit the fair this week and look for my items to see if I won anything. I was able to pick some BlackBerries and make the jam in time. Also this year I decided to enter my Dahlia's that I've been growing this year. I got the root in a "Perennial Swap" at work earlier in the Spring. I've never had Dahlia's before so I thought why not. They did really well and I've entered them into the "Cut Flower" division. This is the first time I've entered in that category.

The on Sunday I cut a hole in my kitchen to build a recessed wall cabinet between the studs in the interior wall. I'll post more about that as I go along.

Starting and Frogging and Can't make up my mind!

I think I'm suffering from startitis. I've cast on for I dont know how many projects and I've frogged about all them so far, some more than once. I just cant seem to make up my mind and stick with anything knitting wise. I'm in such a slump! I'm trying to get some socks started for Christmas but either I dont like the pattern or my ribbing seems too stretchy.. I'm afraid it wont hold up over time. I started a new sweater, but decided its not going to work. So to the frog pond it goes. Whats that saying "the road to hell was paved with good intentions"??? All my projects started out with good intentions.. but they aren't making it. Yet my stash keeps getting more and more enhancement. So far in the last month or so I've purchased more yarn, a swift, a winder and some sewing stuff. Here is a pic of 12 skeins of this Cascade 220 color Mustard that was marked down that I purchased with a gift card that I won. How cool was that! I also got this cute pattern that would make some cute Summer aprons/skirts. I wish I could find a project and stay excited about it long enough to do it!

Berry Hunting

Its Blueberry season here in Beautiful Vermont. The last few days have been cooler which makes if perfect time to go berry picking. Last Tuesday I went with my aunt to Owls Head Farm to pick Blueberries. The picking was excellent. The bushes were soo loaded with fruit. You didn't have to go far to fill your container. Tuesdays and Thursdays are band nights. Local bands play outdoors in the hills while you pick. Some even had a picnic with them. It was great.
We didn't bring a picnic dinner. But we plan to go again in a couple of weeks. Earlier we went went to check on the Wild Blackberry situation for the State Fair Along. They are coming along and could probably be ready to pick in another week or two. So far all that was ripe were Black Caps and Scotch Caps. I did see two Raspberries there were hanging on that were quickly snatched up by yours truly.
Entering homemade preserves into the Champlain Valley Fair is nothing new to me. I have entered multiple kinds for the last several years and won every color of ribbon they offer. I have always wanted to enter Blackberry Jam into the competition. However thats been no easy feat. Blackberries ripen in the area right on top of the fair dates. Somehow I start out with good intentions yet I miss the cutoff time. This year I'm really trying to make the effort! But I plan on some sort of backup too. Every year I check and I've never seen anyone else enter Blackberry Jam.. I'm hoping this will be the year!

Just a little last minute weekend post. I finally have a cast off!!! Yes, my Ripple Socks in Mountain Colors Yarn Burgandy are DONE. I thought I'd never get them finished. Also I stitched the toe closed of 1 Patons Kroy Sock in Vista Sea. I still have another to start but I'm feeling a little Sock Syndrome on this one... I think it's going to have to wait a bit. It's been a very busy weekend. Lots of home improvement going on around here... weather pending of course. I was starting to think that the entire weekend was going to be a washout but it cleared up later this morning and held out till the end of the day. Turned out to be pretty nice.

Seems like forever since I posted last. Things were busy along with a Holiday thrown in the mix. I finally got around to figuring some things out on the sidebar, like my buttons for instance. But they work now! Finally! I'm getting the hang of this.. bit by bit.
I was on vacation for the last week. I did a lot of landscaping and general outdoor work around my place. We finally had some breaks in the weather so I had to take advantage of it. Of course I didn't think to take any pictures to post.. oh well. I did do some knitting on my purple sock. Though it only has a heel now. I didn't bother to take another picture. I did make some progress on my paisley skirt. All thats left is a hem. I also got the pieces cut on the blue/black rose fabric one. Maybe sometime this week I can get to that.
Back to the holiday. We didn't have the usual gathering of relatives at my Aunts' house. It was work work work at my parents doing landscaping galore. Later on it was sore sore sore.
Also... looks like I won something on the State Fair Along! Cool... I never win.. and it's my first along! I'm still going to probably make Jam. The Champlain Valley Exposition isn't until the end of August.. so I have some time. I emailed them for a new 2006 entry book. They said they should be sending them out soon.

New Projects? Was I nuts?

This last weekend was productive, despite the heat. I felt the need to add to my wardrobe, particularly in the skirt area. I went to Joanns and cleaned up a bit on their friday/saturday sale. I got this pretty brown/multi colored paisley. Like Larissa I have got this thing for the color brown. Especially when its paired with dk. pink and blue. I've noticed the last few months I've seen more and more of this combo and I think "How come I never put them together before now?". Well I found this satiny/poly paisley that made a really nice skirt. That was Saturdays project cutting the pattern, the pieces and sewing them together. I amazed myself and only had to "rip" a couple of times. Due to my lack of recent sewing skills and not paying enough attention. Ages ago I saw this plaque or something somewhere that said "Ye shall sew, Ye shall rip". I think in my case it should read "Ye shall craft, Ye shall un-craft"! Well all my new skirt needs is a completed hem and maybe I won't have to dig so hard to find something suitable to wear to the next I event I have to attend. YEAH RIGHT! I dont have a picture of them semi-completed skirt to post. Also in the picture I am posting there is some blue rose and black poly and a brown linen blend. Yes more skirts. The fabric was 50% off ! The patterns were 1.99 ea. and thread was half-off too! Can't beat that. Also in the same purchase but not in the picture a lone skein of yarn was brought home too. Its kind of a curly eyelash yarn in a periwinkle color. Something new for the stash.
Also on another note I have joined the "State Fair Along". As soon as I can I will add the link to the sidebar. This is the year for Blackberry Jam, I can feel it! More on that later.

Works in Progress

I took some pictures of just a couple of my wip's to post. I've just got way too many hobbies. But don't we all? Lately I've been trying to focus on this xstitch I started too long ago (that I won't even mention for the shame). Anyway it was meant to be a wedding gift. It still is. It's just a simple wedding sampler. So why is it taking me soo long to get done? I won't answer that question. I had a rocky start with it, but it has been moving along better. But for whatever reason it seems like its taking me forever to finish the borders of the hearts in squares. I was so happy just to get the bottom row done. Please ignore the nasty hoop marks on this. I dont have a scroll frame small enough for this. I would like to try the Q snap frames.( If anyone reads this and have used the Q snap frames I'd apprechiate any input. ) Though now I look at it and I probably didnt leave enough fabric along the edge. Well craft and learn I guess.

Another wip is this pair of socks. I'm finally on the heel of the second sock. The yarn is Mountain Colors weavers wool in burgandy. I got it off ebay last year and I've really liked knitting with it. It's softer than it looks. The pattern is the Ripple Stitch pattern from Mountain Colors. I like how these socks have a souchyness to them. They will make cold weather socks. The pattern has kept knitting these interesting. This is the first pair of socks that I have used a differant pattern other than my usual "Yankee Knitter Socks" on. This is my 7th pair of socks in my knitting history. In the same picture the Autumn Foliage yarn is also meant for socks. Though I wont go into a lot of detail about that now. But they will be a basic ribbed pattern...something on the manly side. This picture is dark and doesnt show the the pretty ripple pattern well. I should try to get some outdoor shots. My goal this year was to knit a pair of socks a month. Well so far this year I have knit almost 2 1/2 pairs. Thats a little shy of 1 per month. Not much of a dent in the 30+ skeins of sock yarn that are hidden around my house. But like my mom says "Yarn doesnt go bad". HA! I'll leave with a picture of a slice of my stash. Oh pretty yarn how I love thee.
